The Varg field was closed in August 2016 after having produced nearly 100 million barrels of oil since production began in 1998.

The Varg field was developed with a wellhead platform (Varg A) and a production ship (Petrojarl Varg) with integrated oil storage. Varg A was normally unmanned. The wellhead platform and the production ship were connected through flexible pipelines for oil production, water and gas injection and umbilicals for power supply and control. The oil were offloaded from the FPSO to shuttle tankers via a discharging system located aft on the FPSO.
